The Facts Regarding Apple Cider Vinegar and Weight Loss

The Facts Regarding Apple Cider Vinegar and Weight Loss

For centuries, apple cider vinegar has been used as an ancient folk remedy for natural weight loss. When researching this subject, you will find many sources of hyped  information that touts ACV to be some kind of magical, miracle elixir for all kinds of health issues. Remember, that most of what you read about these claims has, largely, been unproven.
For the sake of this article, however, let us focus only on the known benefits of ACV regarding weight loss. Is this fermented liquid really useful in helping those who are overweight lose excess weight, or is it a hoax?
In reality, the answer is both yes and no. Even though there is not a lot of substantial evidence to support it, ACV is a traditional folk remedy that has been used successfully by millions of people, for thousands of years,  in a variety of medicinal applications. Many people believe, whole heartedly, in its usefulness as an alternative medicine tool. With the powerful force of 'no doubt' being the most dominate thought in the mind of a believer, strange health benefits do happen even though it cannot be scientifically proven. Conventional medicine really has no healthy, self-interest in studying ACV's purported health effects by its fans.
After all, vinegar is relatively easy and inexpensive to produce, and there is not a lot of big money to be made in using it, or promoting it, as a medicine.
There have been several professional studies performed that show ACV may have some promising potential to help support weight loss.  Here are a few of the honorable mentions:
  • Apple cider vinegar has been shown to help balance blood sugar levels. It appears to help lower the glycemic index, and helps prevent blood sugar spikes, in some people who are obese or diabetic.
  • A small dose (1 to 2 teaspoons in a 8 ounce glass of water 30 minutes before each meal) helps reduce appetite. This could be due to the natural appetite suppressing effects of water, ACV, or both.
  • Even though vinegar is highly acidic, it actually helps neutralize acid by helping body fluids become more alkaline, thus supporting weight loss.
  • A 2006 study suggests it may help lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels. ACV has good anti-fungal and anti-microbial properties to help ward off a candida yeast infection, which can thwart your efforts to lose weight because of refined carbohydrate cravings.
When deciding to use ACV  for any type of medicinal purpose, be sure to select only a raw, non-distilled vinegar. You may be able to find  this type of vinegar in your regular grocery store. But, more likely than not, you will probably need to look for it at a local health food store.
Look for ACVs that have been cold pressed and made from whole, organically grown apples, with no added chemical preservatives, and in which the 'mother' of vinegar liquid has been retained. This 'mother' substance, as it is lovingly known, is the gelatinous liqueur that is naturally formed during the final fermentation process.
This milky, cloudy, and stringy looking stuff at the bottom of the container is what contains the healthiest part of the mixture. It also lets you know that the important vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and naturally occurring good bacteria have not been compromised due to over processing, filtration, or excessive heating. Before consuming, shake the the bottle gently to thoroughly distribute all of the nutrients, pour, and serve.
As a quick pick-me-up in getting you through a physical task, drink ACV  mixed with an equal amount of raw honey in a tall glass of warm water. Stir to dissolve the honey and drink.
For extra digestive power, eliminate the excess sugar found in honey, sip on the water and vinegar drink instead.  Refrain from drinking to much water, or any other beverage during your meal, and for up to an hour afterward. Give your gastric stomach juices enough time to fully break down the  food you just ate, without weakening their effects with added liquids.
Common sense should tell us that there really is no simple one-shot solution to shedding those unwanted pounds. Permanent changes in the way we eat and drink, adding some physical exertion, and addressing emotional attitudes towards the food we eat are the only long-term solutions that will help invigorate  healthy weight loss, and maintaining general health.
At the very least, it can't hurt to add a little ACV to your overall diet plan. It may not make your dreams come true overnight, but if your expectations are not too unrealistic, it may contribute rather nicely with an existing healthy  lifestyle already in place.
